In 2025 the Aylmer Heritage Association is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its work to preserve and protect Aylmer’s heritage and is commemorating 175 years since the macadamization (paving) of the Aylmer Road.  One of the proposed activities is to conduct a small-scale survey of changes along the Aylmer Road, by visiting and documenting the status of a select number of heritage buildings featured in Diane Aldred’s 1994 book:  The Aylmer Road – an Illustrated History.

The information will be used to create a supplement to the Aylmer Road book as well as four to eight, posters for presentation at the 26th Salon du patrimoine to be held in Aylmer on May 10, 2025, and a presentation for different audiences.

Call for Applications

The Board of the Aylmer Heritage Association is seeking two persons to conduct research and write a report on their findings under the direction of a small working group.

Research will include:

  • visiting approximately 15 to 20 sites identified by the working group along the Aylmer Road from the Champlain Bridge to the Symmes Inn Museum;
  • making observations and documenting findings using the working group’s template to indicate the status of these buildings; and,
  • preparing a draft report for the working group and Board of Directors.

Applicants should have experience in conducting research and in writing reports.  The work may be conducted in either French or English; final products will be bilingual (the Association will arrange for translation).  You must be able to visit the selected sites on your own and may use the Association’s office and equipment to prepare the report and associated documents.  Ideally, you would have an interest in Aylmer’s history and heritage.

The research and writing will be conducted from mid-February to late March, followed by additional work, as required, during April and May.  Remuneration will be in the form of an honorarium of between $1,000 and $1,500.

To apply for this position, please send a letter of interest indicating your skills, experience, and availability to: associationpatrimoineaylmer@gmail.com.  Applicants selected for an interview will be requested to show samples of their work.

Closing date: February 23, 2025.
